Parents for Opportunities

Parents for Opportunities is an organisation set up by parents of children and young people with any disability in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Anyone can join, although there are certain requirements that come with membership. You must attend meetings, outings and give support at fundraising events.

We arrange monthly outings together as a group, and try and vary these to suit the needs of all children. Some of the children don't like the cinema for example, so if we do go to the cinema we will try to do something different the next time. We don't employ volunteers, we just all go along as parents and take care of our own children. Brothers and sisters are welcome too and are paid for by the group.

We have very informal meetings every month, usually in St Patrick's school on the second monday of every month. But you can check this page for details of the next meeting, which is posted on the right hand side.

How can I join?

We are open to any family that has a child with a disability in the greater Lisburn area. It can be a mild or severe disability, behavioural, physical or learning, and the child can be any age. We don't have any restrictions or exclusions, all we ask is that you come to meetings and help with fundraising, and then come along to the outings. We have all come from different backgrounds, but we as parents all agree that a child with a disability has little or no social interaction outside school, and we want to do something to change that.

Because we don't have premises or employ staff, it has been relatively easy to raise enough money to cover our monthly outings. This way we hope to keep going for a long time. We are open to new members, so if you are interested, go to the contact page and email us.
