Parents for Opportunities

Download the feedback sheet and email it back filled in to Anne.Murphy@positive-futures.net

Parents for Opportunities is an organisation set up by parents of children and young people involved with Positive Futures in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Anyone who is a registered with Positive Futures can join, although there are certain requirements that come with membership. Positive Futures is an organisation that gives support to families who have a child with a learning disability in the Lisburn area.

How can I join?

Any family that is involved with Positive Futures can join the group, by filling in a membership form and paying a £15 registration fee.

This fee is renewed every September

New applicants need to be aware however that registration is not the only thing needed to become a member. Every parent or carer who has a child attending the afterschools clubs or various other activities organised throughout the year has to be proactive in raising funds for the group. This group is a fundraising group, the activities are all organised by Positive Futures and they provide the support workers. The parents group exists to raise funds for their own children, so that they can take part in local afterschools activities.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Attending Committee meetings: The committee meets every second Wednesday of the month @ 7pm in the Lisburn Positive Futures office. The committee arranges the fundraising and informs members of what is coming up and events that have been planned. Attendance at these monthly meetings is optional, but anyone who has ideas or wants to contribute is very welcome.

  • Twice yearly general meetings: Members are required to attend these. The date and venue will be arranged nearer the time and members informed.

  • Fundraising: Parents for Opportunities aim to arrange at least 1 major fundraising event per quarter. Members are required to take part in a minimum of 2 per year.

  • Contribution towards the cost of activities: Parents for Opportunities subsidise all of the activities, but the parents will have to pay a small part of the cost. Most cost around £2.00 per week, but certain things such as horse riding cost around £7 per week.

The money raised goes towards the things that are required to run successful activities for the young people. Venues, transport, support staff and activities themselves all cost money. The afterschools activities have been very well attended, and we hope to carry on for many years to come, but to do this we need the support of all existing members and new members to bring fresh ideas.

Failure to take part in fundraising or attend the twice yearly meetings will unfortunately mean your child will not be able to take advantage of subsidised activities and may result in membership being stopped.

Remember, You have to be in it to win it!
